Pockets, pockets and more pockets?

If you work in an industry that needs tough, rugged clothing, there’s more to think about than how long the garment will last. It has to be comfortable and practical as well as durable, sometimes making picking the right make and style a tricky business. Work trousers definitely fall under this category.

So, what should you consider when buying a pair of work trousers? Well, that’s a bit complicated. Should it be comfort, you will after all be working in them for hours on end. You normally find that different makes will have slightly different sizings so it really is best to try them on before you buy.

Pockets, pockets and more pockets.
How many do you need? What are they to be used for? How long has that sandwich been in there? It’s very easy to go overboard when picking the right style of trouser, with the type of industry you’re in dictating your needs. Consider what you’re using the pockets for, whether you need one for a mobile phone, pencil, knife or should you limit the number so you don’t start losing things about your person.

You can also examine whether it would be an advantage to use specialist pockets. Hammer loops and holster pockets can be a great time saver for some professions as it gives them easy access to frequently used tools.

Another feature in many work trousers are knee pad pouches. If you’re going to be on your knees a lot this is well worth considering. Internal or external the pads can be attached when needed.

Another consideration is colour.

It might not seem important but if you’re looking for something out of the ordinary, that’s not your traditional black, blue or beige, you may well find your choice limited. If the colour is critical, it may be best to start here.

So, what are we left with? Quality. Work trouser are made to last and should stand up to a fair bit of abuse but like everything else in the world, you get what you pay for. The Cordura fabric is well known for it’s durability and is normally used in knee padding and pockets so it’s worth looking out for this in the specs. Another detail that’s worth noting is triple stitching. A lot of the more inexpensive trousers have only double and it’s obvious that a garment with more stitching will last better over time.
